Imagining the potential…
After the resurrection, the disciples weren’t celebrating in the streets.
They were hiding.
Scripture tells us that they gathered behind locked doors for fear of what might happen next (John 20:19). The tomb was empty. Jesus was alive. Yet fear still kept them stuck.
And if we’re honest, many of us live the same way.
We believe in God’s promises,
yet we hesitate to step forward.
We sense His calling,
yet we remain behind our own locked doors.
This week in Faith Forward, we’re exploring how Jesus meets us in our fear and calls us into courageous obedience.
Because courage isn’t the absence of fear.
Courage is obedience in the presence of it.
Unlocking the Doors of Fear
Fear has a subtle way of shaping our decisions. It doesn’t always shout; often, it whispers—convincing us to stay comfortable, play it safe, and avoid risk.
But when Jesus appeared to the disciples, His first words were not correction or disappointment. He simply said:
“Peace be with you.”
Before He called them forward, He calmed their hearts. And then He commissioned them: “As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.” (John 20:21)
Jesus didn’t wait for their fear to disappear. He met them in it and invited them to move forward anyway.
The same is true for us today. Faith is not proven by the absence of fear but by our willingness to obey God despite it.
3 Common Fears That Keep Men Stuck
1. Fear of Failure
Many men hesitate to step forward because they’re afraid of getting it wrong. We worry about making mistakes, disappointing others, or falling short of expectations.
But failure is not final in God’s kingdom. Scripture reminds us that God’s strength is made perfect in our weakness. Obedience matters more than perfection. When you step out in faith, God meets you in the process.
Faithfulness, not flawlessness, is what God requires.
2. Fear of Rejection
The fear of what others might think can be paralyzing. Whether it’s initiating a spiritual conversation, leading your family, or stepping into a new opportunity, the possibility of rejection often keeps men silent and still.
Yet Jesus Himself faced rejection and continued to walk in obedience to the Father. When our identity is rooted in Christ, the approval of others loses its power over us.
You are already accepted by God—let that truth free you from the fear of others’ opinions.
3. Fear of Inadequacy
Many men quietly believe they are not qualified for what God is calling them to do. Thoughts like “I’m not spiritual enough,” “I don’t know enough,” or “Someone else would do it better” can prevent us from stepping into our purpose.
But throughout Scripture, God consistently uses ordinary people to accomplish extraordinary things. He doesn’t call the qualified; He qualifies the called.
Your adequacy comes from God, not from your own abilities.
Practical Action: Taking the First Step
Freedom from fear begins with movement. You don’t have to overhaul your life this week—just take one intentional step forward.
This Week’s Action Steps:
Identify one area where fear has kept you from moving forward.
It might involve a conversation, a leadership decision, serving in ministry, or pursuing a calling God has placed on your heart.Take a small, intentional step of obedience.
Send the message. Initiate the conversation. Volunteer. Pray with your family. Apply for the opportunity. Small steps of faith unlock big doors over time.
Remember, clarity often follows courage. When you step forward, God meets you there.
Reflection Question
Take a few quiet moments this week to reflect on this question: “What would I do if I fully trusted God in this area?”
Let this question guide your prayers and decisions. Often, the answer reveals the very step God is inviting you to take.
TOOL OF THE WEEK — “The Courage Key”
Think of fear as a locked door. This week, choose one “key” to begin unlocking it:
Name the Fear – Write down the specific fear you’re facing.
Anchor in Truth – Find a Scripture that speaks to God’s faithfulness (e.g., Isaiah 41:10 or 2 Timothy 1:7).
Act in Faith – Take one practical step that aligns with trust in God rather than fear.
Small acts of courage build spiritual momentum and reinforce a life of faith.
Faith Prayer
“Lord, replace my fear with faith and give me the courage to step where You are leading. Fill me with Your peace and remind me that You are with me every step of the way. Amen.”
Identify fear-based barriers in your life
Replace fear with biblical truth
Develop actionable steps toward courageous obedience
Strengthen your confidence in God’s calling
If this month’s EMERGE series is helping you step forward, this guide will equip you to continue walking in faith with clarity and purpose.
Final Encouragement
The disciples began behind locked doors, but they didn’t stay there. Empowered by the presence of Jesus and the power of the Holy Spirit, they stepped out and changed the world.
The same invitation is extended to you.
You don’t have to wait until fear disappears.
You simply have to trust God enough to take the next step.
