Walking out of my tomb…

Easter reminds us that Jesus left the grave.

But many of us still live like we haven’t.

We’re forgiven —
but still ashamed.

We’re alive in Christ —
but still hesitant.

We believe the truth —
but still carry old names, old fears, and old patterns.

This week in Faith Forward, we’re asking a hard but freeing question: What needs to stay in the grave?

Because resurrection is not just something Jesus experienced.
It’s something He invites you into.

And you cannot walk in new life
while dragging old graves behind you.

What Needs to Stay in the Grave?

A lot of men are physically alive
but spiritually stuck.

Still shaped by what happened.
Still defined by who they were.
Still carrying things Jesus already buried.

The resurrection means your past is no longer your master.

But many of us keep returning to graves
God never asked us to revisit.

We go back to old shame.
Old fear.
Old identities.

And then we wonder why we don’t feel free.

Here’s the truth: You cannot walk in new life while remaining in old graves.

Resurrection means something old has died.
And something new has begun.

That doesn’t mean growth is instant.
It means the old life no longer gets the final word.

3 Things to Leave Behind

1. Shame from past failures

A lot of men still live under the weight of what they did,
what they should have done,
or what they wish they could undo.

But shame is not the voice of Jesus.

Conviction leads you to repentance.
Shame keeps you chained to your past.

If Jesus has forgiven you,
you do not have to keep punishing yourself.

What He has covered,
you do not have to keep uncovering.

2. Fear of stepping forward

Sometimes the tomb isn’t just about what happened yesterday.
Sometimes it’s about what you’re afraid to do next.

Fear keeps you stuck at the edge of obedience.

It whispers:
“What if you fail?”
“What if you’re not ready?”
“What if nothing changes?”

But resurrection life always moves forward.

You do not need full confidence to obey God.
You need willingness.

Sometimes the next step is small.
But small steps still lead out of graves.

3. Old identities that no longer define you

Some men are still living by names Jesus already replaced.

Failure.
Weak.
Disqualified.
Not enough.
Too far gone.
Always this way.

But when Christ raises a man,
He gives him a new identity.

You are not who you were apart from Him.
You are not only what happened to you.
You are not permanently defined by your worst moment.

If you are in Christ,
the old identity is buried.

Stop introducing yourself to your future
with names from your past.

A Hard but Honest Question

What part of your past is still shaping your present?

That’s where this gets real.

Because most of us know the right answer in church.
But in real life, we still carry things that should have been buried.

We carry memories that still accuse us.
We carry labels that still define us.
We carry fear that still limits us.

And the issue isn’t whether Jesus rose.
The issue is whether we are willing to live like He did.

Freedom begins when you stop calling “home”
what Jesus called you out of.

3 Reflection Questions

Take a few minutes with these this week:

1. What part of my past is still shaping my present?
What memory, failure, wound, or regret still has too much influence over how you think and live?

2. Where is God inviting me to step forward?
What next step of obedience, healing, leadership, or faith have you been avoiding?

3. What belief about myself needs to be buried?
What old name or false identity have you been carrying that no longer agrees with who you are in Christ?

Don’t rush these.

Sometimes emergence begins
with telling the truth about what you’re still carrying.

TOOL OF THE WEEK — “The Grave Check”

This week, do one simple exercise:

Write down one thing that needs to stay buried.

It might be:

  • a failure you keep replaying

  • a fear that keeps controlling you

  • an old identity you keep wearing

  • a lie you keep believing about yourself

Then write this underneath it: “This does not define me anymore because of Jesus.”

Pray over it.
Say it out loud.
And take one step this week that reflects your new life, not your old grave.

Small acts of faith
help retrain the soul for freedom.

EMERGENCE PRAYER

Jesus, because You rose, help me leave behind what no longer defines me and step into the new life You’ve given. Amen.
